Default New Moto phone announcement next week

Very good news is coming. For those who listened to the Motorola earnings webcast, on more than one occasion the CEO and COO hinted at a new product being shown at the analysts meeting next week. An analyst even tried hinting at a product he was aware of and the Moto guys were quick to shut him up and said "Wait for the official annoucement from Tom next week". Tom is the head (although he is on his way out) of the cellphone division. I strongly suggest you tune in to the webcast on Tuesday. They already announced shipping products today, and good things always happen in three.

Thanks for the info. Do you know the time and a link to the webcast?

I did a Google search and I came up with the following.

First, here's a link to the analysts meeting that bonoriffic was referring to.

http://www.motorola.com/content/0,,2622,00.html

And here's the page where you can get the webcasts. I think they'll post it after the meeting is complete.

It should be interesting, especially since Moto's been a little thin when it comes to new product announcements lately.

EDIT: Hmmmm....

The V710 was announced back in March. Delivery was announced this week. So next week's announcement isn't the V710. What's more, no one ever said the product announcement was for a CDMA phone.

I don't know what model that is in the FCC listing, but it doesn't look like Moto's typical design, does it?

(Also, as a side note, if they're going to file a confidentiality request, you'd think they'd specify the SAR report should be included, since it's got pictures in it...)

Nice play on words Critic. I guess no one noticed my use of bold in the first post. Anyway, somebody dropped the ball on the confidentiality part and the name is clearly visible in one of the docs as well as a few hard to see photos.

Moto's secret new phone, which isn't so secret anymore, is called the V3. I'm suprised nobody has picked up on this yet, or found the documents too boring to get to the good stuff.

It is for GSM. It is similar in functionality to a V710. So why the big secret? Well right on the page requesting confidentiality they spell it out. "This equipment is significantly “thinner” than other marketed Cellular/PCS transceivers. Due to the technology involved in the unique form factor of this product, Motorola additionally requests 45 day confidentiality on exhibits containing equipment photographs or illustrations."

So it is very thin and very different looking. By Tuesday we will know more.

No. This will be something new. The StarTAC is 10 years old. It is time to move on. Motorola certainly seems to have. http://motofuture.motorola.com

Motofuture? Is this the new DigitalDNA? (ie: much-hyped campaign that doesn't make sense to anyone outside of Motorola...)

Then why did Motorola announce that new StarTac's will be available in the USA, taking advantage of its well-known, well-loved brand and the current marketing trend of retro products?

This may not be the new StarTac, but Motorola is releasing one.

I think you are referencing a prior thread that the originator admitted was a spoof.

Well, if that is the case, then sorry for the diversion. What I read was posted on another forum. I did not see a retraction.

You may be thinking about the info cross-posted from Phonescoop from the guy who went to the Moto presentation and claimed (among other things) that the V265 would be released as the "new StarTAC". It won't be.

The phone will be announced at the media event, which is actually on Monday night, 7 - 8pm Central. I'd imagine it would be at the end.

http://www.motorola.com/content/0,,2642,00.html

The Tuesday webcast is a different event, but will certainly mention it at some point too.

Still suprised at how little interest this has generated. Maybe people need a high resolution picture to get it. Bluetooth, huge screen, and thinner than any other cell phone. A lot thinner. With all the complaints about how bulky the V710 and V600 are you would think this would generate interest.

I agree that unless people can see a picture or get a preview of the phone on one of the wireless web sites, it's not going to generate interest. I guarantee that once there are pictures/information released for the V3, there will be numerous threads on this phone on HowardForums, just like there were for the V600. The Motorola board over there is dominated by the GSM phones, very few threads on the V710. They're all on the Verizon board. I'm really curious to see what this phone looks like.

I hate that the FCC allows to keep certain documents confidential. Before you used to be able to look at the "external photos" document so you could see what the phone would look like.

They stopped letting you see the "external photos"? I was wondering why I didn't see the buttons for them. Damn... the FCC is ruining this country from free speech on Howard Stern to just previewing cellphones.

Seeing how you are Mr. Verizon, I wasn't expecting a GSM unit to garner so much of your attention. I have no intention of leaving VZW at this point so I'm not interested from a consumer point of view, but I always like new technology so this will be interesting. Thanks again for the heads up, amazing how you're always right on target.

I'm Mr. Verizon? Hardly. This board just favors Verizon so conversation tends more toward them.

As was stated earlier in the thread, it was Motorola that asked that those documents be removed. The FCC required justification for removing pictures and Moto's response was basically "Look, this is the world's thinnest phone. We don't want anyone to know we shrunk the V710 by more than half until the last possible moment for competive reasons." See Exhibit 13 document for the exact wording.

Critic didn't specifically say click on this exact link and you will see pictures of the phone. So I will... Click here to see pictures. Scroll to page 43 and beyond. The good pictures were all removed. Some idiot didn't realize that the SAR reports also had pictures. It is hard to see because emission graphs cover the phone, but you can kind of see it.

For those with poor eyesight, take a T720 because most of us know what that looks like. Open it up. Extend the screen the entire length of the flip, so just a tiny sliver is left for the earhole and the rest is all screen. Now snap off the bulkier keypad portion of the flip. Now take the remaining screen portion of the flip and imagine that was a flip phone. Giant screen. Bluetooth. So thin you could put it in your pocket and forget it was there. On paper it sure looks promising. You can't see the exterior yet so maybe it is super ugly, but I doubt it.

Oh don't worry about Verizon. The V3 is a 2004 phone so it is worth talking about now. I've heard stories of Verizon's 2005 lineup... very cool stuff. Way too early to discuss, things can change. If I had told you about one of the original features of the A840 (which didn't make it into the phone) you'd all be so pissed when it never showed up.

By the way, the A860 is the A840 but for China and will be shipping shortly. It will be months before Verizon gets it. Same phone, except in Chinese and no Get It Now. Remember that the next time you hear about a "delay" in a phone meant for Verizon.

Thanks for heads up. Actually, your link took us to the entire FCC document list for that phone. Here is the specific SAR Report document which has those pics you described on pages 43, 48 and 53.

https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/f...ive_or_pdf=pdf

I totally missed that when I scanned the SAR report the first ime because of the graphs over them. Once I saw those graphs, I skipped those pages. Ever since I saw the SAR Report for the V710 with pics of the phone with the Verizon logo, I always check them for more pics of the phone.

I would guess that it at least does not have the camera. With current technology I don't see Motorola putting a 1.2 MP+ camera into a phone that small.

That's just my 2 cents though. I could easily be wrong.

I wonder if this phone uses the Mitsubishi double sided (reversible) LCD screen in order to make it so much thinner than other cell phones. I remember reading about this a few months back. Here is an article on that technology.

http://www.computerworld.com/hardwar...,90276,00.html

In that Computeworld article, it says "The display, which the company says is a first, was developed initially for use in clamshell-type cellular telephone handsets and could help make such telephones thinner and lighter. Many clamshell-style handsets have two displays, a large main display that faces inward and a smaller subdisplay that faces outward and is used to show basic information when the phone is closed and the main display is out of view. "

Well if you think about it... the V710 is a very large phone, even compared to the already girthy V600. So half that size may be like the size of a LG G4011, for example. But don't get me wrong, the G4011 is still a small phone, and it'd be nice to see a full-featured phone of that size from Motorola AND be on GSM .

I currently have a LG VX4400 and how does the v710 compare to that? I get annoyed sometimes that the VX4400 is a little thick for me to put in my pocket and so I have to use the belt clip.

Camera, bluetooth, external 4k screen, internal 262k screen, mini-USB, metal case. And did I mention it is super thin?

Quote from AnalogTiger's previous post:
" The beginning of sales is expected to be in September, the price will be between 650 and 750 USD."

Any idea if that is with or without a plan? It makes the v710 look like an econo-phone.

Sweet Zombie Jesus! That is a NICE looking phone. Reminds me of a old-school Star Trek communicator.

I noticed that the keypad is flat - essentially a touch screen. I wonder if they used the same tech Apple used on the touch sensitive buttons on the 3G iPod...

Wow, I am really impressed by that phone. Unfortunately I can not get one, I will be entering ito a two year contract with Verizon as soon as I can.

However if that phone is any indication of the direction Motorola and the entire Wireless industry is heading then I believe we have some very exciting times ahead of us.

damn...now I'm second-guessing myself wondering if I should goto GSM for that phone instead of the v710...some help please...

But damn a price tag of between $500 and $750...that's way too much for a cell-phone.
